Martin Rubio is a sculptor who works primarily in metal, wood, and stone. As a young child, Rubio left Puerto Rico and came to live in New York City, where he became one of the founders of "El Taller Boricua" in 1969 and formed part of a "Nuyorican" vanguard. Whether in public spaces or intimate settings, his sculptures show mysterious forms that are simple and compelling at the same time. Early in his career, Rubio began to notice his eyesight failing and went through the process of adjusting to this reality. He developed a particular interest in work being made by visually impaired artists and in exhibitions for the blind. Among several places, his work has appeared at the Lions Gallery of the Senses in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. Rubio's public art pieces are in the U.S. and in Japan; his sculptures are in private collections as well as in several museums. He earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC.
